Lightroom woes
October 9, 2007A couple of days ago I blogged about my issues with Lightroom. I finally made some progress in finding out who or what was responsible for it.
These days you need to have some anti-virus/firewall software installed to keep your computer safe. My choice has always been Kasperksy and a couple of months ago I prolonged my license for another year. Then version 7.0 of Kaspersky Internet Security came around and I decided to upgrade from version 6.0. At that point all was well until I noticed some strange errors when I tried to copy the contents of my CompactFlash card to my harddisk.
Sometimes the device could not be found causing an error message. After some painful hours of debugging I found out what was causing it: KIS 7.0. When I disabled the anti-virus all would work as expected. I ended up turning off the scanning of removable drives.
Enter the Lightroom issues. I discovered recently (by pure luck, I forgot to turn the module back on after copying) that Lightroom would work better with the anti-virus from Kasperksy disabled. So my believe is that Kaspersky locks the database while scanning the files. In that case Lightroom cannot access it and throws up the errors.
I contacted Kasperksy support about this and they told me to uninstall the software, remove all traces of KIS 6.0 with a removal tool and reinstall KIS 7.0. So I followed their procedure (loosing all my firewall settings in the process) and hopefully all is fixed now. I haven’t had the time to actually check but I’m pretty sure it would work.
It has to work because not even Adobe knows what is going on here.
