Over the past three months I tried to develop a site for my GF and the easiest way of doing this was supposed to be by using my own hand-coded Content Management System. The basis of this system was build late 2003 and was primarily meant as a way of learning PHP and MySQL. Over the years I rewrote some stuff, added some new stuff and it all worked quite nicely and stable for my site.

After having a small discussion about the content of my GF’s website I had a good look at the code. Boy, did I come a long way since the majority of the code. Basically the code was really a mess and to accommodate all the new features a full rewrite would be in order. This would require quite some time and that is, unfortunately, something I don’t have. With a full time job, some other projects (among those my GF’s website and off course Pixelpost) and other hobbies I didn’t felt like I could rewrite the core code anytime soon.

After a testing period I decided WordPress would suit my needs the best, so I installed it at my local server and transfered all the older postings, skipping the less relevant postings about layout changes. I even started transferring my old layout to WordPress but in the end I wasn’t happy with it. Luckily I found the excellent Redoable theme which I can modify to suit my needs.

Another major thing which has changed is the fact I’ll be writing in English from now on. There are multiple reasons for this, the main reason being the increased number of foreign visitors to my blog. The other reason is to practice my English writing. So over the next few weeks I’ll translate all the old postings to English.

For the sake of simplicity I will do my normal ranting and raving in Dutch. Website changes, code troubles or snippets are going to be in English and will have a corresponding category and tags. However, the interface will be English for the time being. For now I’ve made my mind about this but you’ll never know for how long.
